Reliable political conditions and cross-party consensus regarding the development of solar energy provide fertile ground for ever increasing efficiency records. In 2004, the photovoltaic industry production broke the 1 GW barrier, produced worldwide some 1,200 MWp of photovoltaic modules and has become a € 5.8 bill. business. In the past 5 years, the yearly growth rate was an average of more than 40%, which makes photovoltaics one of the fastest growing industries at present. Although government grants for new solar power installations drop almost in every country every year, these are often guaranteed for a large amount of years and industry is able to make up for the reduction by lower production costs due to innovation. Today, solar energy is 70% cheaper than in 1990 and technical progress continues unabated |
